Michael G. Kilgore, DVM

 

"Dr. Mike" as he is commonly known is the practice owner and first opened the doors to Homewood Animal Hospital in March 1998.  Dr. Mike attended undergrad at Morehead State University in Kentucky and then obtained his DVM from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982.  He practiced in Atlanta, GA for his first few years before moving to Birmingham, AL where he has been practicing for over 29 years.  

 

Dr. Mike has been married to his wife, Heather, for 32 years.  Heather is a surgical scrub technician at Children's Hospital.  Together they have 3 children, Meghan (33), Drew (30) & Elyse (27).  Meghan is a veterinarian as well and currently works with him at Homewood Animal Hospital.  Drew is a nurse and pursuing a masters in Nurse Anesthesiology and Elyse is a professional hair stylist at Mae Studio in Avondale.  All 3 of their children attended Homewood City Schools from elementary through high school.  

 

Dr. Mike is known for his compassion and empathy when seeing new and old patients.  He enjoys surgery and internal medicine.  He finds nothing more entertaining than trying to solve a difficult puzzle or case.  When he's not saving pets at the clinic, Dr Mike enjoys relaxing at the lake and hanging out with his family.

Meghan S. Harrison, DVM

 

Dr. Harrison received a Bachelors of Science from Birmingham Southern College in 2007 and her DVM from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011.  She and her husband moved to Franklin, TN where she practiced for 2 years before returning home to Homewood Animal Hospital.  Dr. Harrison has a special connection with Homewood Animal Hospital as "Dr. Mike" is her father.  She has worked at the hospital all throughout high school and college prior to attending veterinary school. 

 

Dr. Harrison has been married to her husband, Byron, for 12 years.  Byron is an IT Director for a local corporation called NaphCare, Inc. Together they have three children two very active boys, Elliot and Bradley, and a girl Mae. 

 

Dr. Harrison's special interests include surgery, ultrasound and dermatology.  She was awarded the Dermatology award at Auburn and has incorporated that into her everyday general practice.  In her spare time she enjoys baking cakes, hanging out at the lake and spending time with her family. She has 2 dogs - Lester (French Bulldog) and Clarice (Cardigan Corgi).

Zayauna D. Patterson, DVM

 

Dr. Patterson, or "Dr. Z" as she is more commonly known as, was born and raised in Birmingham, AL, and a product of Homewood High School (2007). She received her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Communications from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2011, and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. Dr. Z moved to Orlando, FL following graduation, where she lived and worked for a year before moving back home to Birmingham, AL.

Dr. Z got her first taste of veterinary medicine shadowing Dr. Mike after graduating high school in 2007. Every summer and holiday break she has come back to work here throughout college and prior to attending veterinary school. She started providing veterinary relief work on Saturdays in March 2019, and officially joined our team in April 2019.

Dr. Z's interests include nutrition and reproduction. During her time in veterinary school, she served as one of Tuskegee University's Hill's Pet Nutrition Student Representatives, and applies what she learned in her everyday practice. In her spare time, Dr. Z enjoys baking sweet treats, watching football, and spending quality time with her loved ones, including her 4 rescue fur children Coco Chanel (Jack Russell Terrier), Olaf (Chiweenie), Orville (Blue Heeler Mix) and Jilly (Grey Tabby).

Tabatha Higginbotham, DVM

 

Dr. Tabatha Higginbotham is originally from Locust Fork, AL.  She received her B.S. in Biology from UAB in 2017 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021.  Dr. Higginbotham has been a member of the Homewood Animal family for many years.  She began shadowing Dr. Harrison and Dr. Mike and fell in love with the profession.  She worked as a veterinary technician for several years while attending school to pursue her career dreams.  

Dr. Higginbotham's interests include surgery and internal medicine.  In her free time she enjoys outdoor activities with her dogs.  She is a loving pet owner to Dixie - a sweet spirited border collie, Annie - an energetic labrador, and Lola, Felix & Tito - 3 cats that actually run the family.

Audrey P. Rice, DVM

Dr. Audrey Pugh is from Vestavia Hills, AL. She attended Auburn University where she got her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences in May of 2018. She then moved to Starkville, MS where she attended Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with her doctorate in May of 2022. Following graduation, she moved back to Birmingham and continued her career at Homewood Animal Hospital. Dr. Pugh previously worked as technician at Homewood Animal Hospital throughout school breaks during her undergraduate and veterinary school years.

 

Dr. Pugh has a special interest in veterinary dermatology, and received the “2022 Dechra Award of Excellence in Dermatology”. Outside of the veterinary world, she is loves to spend time outdoors. She frequently goes hiking and kayaking with her chihuahua mix, “Scooter”. (Scooter was a rescue puppy from Mississippi, who happened to be Dr. Pugh’s first dog neuter!) Her other interests include learning how to cook dishes from around the world and dabbling in different sewing projects during colder weather.
